Rotary and Business – A Winning Combination on the Golf Course

Hereford Elgar Rotary had a brilliant day partnering with Brightwells Auctioneers for their Charity Golf Day at Burghill Valley Golf Club. Thanks to Steve – one of Elgar members who runs Brightwells’ Plant and Machinery Auctions – we were able to link our Rotary energy with Brightwells’ organisation and sponsorship, and the results spoke for themselves.

First and foremost, a huge thank you to Brightwells for leading the event, to Burghill Valley Golf Club for being such generous hosts, and to the many sponsors who supported the day with prizes, teams, and donations. Special thanks go to:

  • Humfrys and Symonds – sponsors of the Longest Drive competition
  • Adam Neath 4×4 – sponsor of the Nearest the Pin competition
  • Buy Jeans – sponsors of the team goody bags
  • UK Mini Trucks – sponsors of the trophies for the team and individual competitions

Without this network of goodwill, we wouldn’t have been able to raise over £5,500 for St Michael’s Hospice and other local good causes.

Rotary works best when business and volunteering combine. This event was a great reminder that volunteering isn’t just about rattling buckets or supporting charities directly – it’s also about giving time, skills, and energy to support businesses and create opportunities for fundraising. Rotary has a wealth of expertise within its membership, and when that is linked with business partnerships, the impact multiplies.

On the day, Elgar Rotarians provided raffle prizes, a refreshment stop at the 10th tee, scorecard adjudication (including sorting one card where a captain had forgotten his glasses and under-scored his team by seven points!), and plenty of networking and cheer. Brightwells, in turn, brought superb organisation and sponsorship, proving how powerful collaboration can be.

The result was 20 teams of golfers aged 18 to 80, a day filled with friendship, laughs, and some excellent golf. And in a twist of fate, President Andy Banks and his team took the overall win – no fixing, honestly!

Business, Rotary, and volunteering – three elements that, when combined, deliver something far greater than the sum of their parts.
