Hereford Elgar Rotary enjoyed a really interesting evening hosted by The Duchy of Cornwall at their offices in Dewsall. We learnt about this ancient organisation and how it all works with a talk by our Land Steward for Herefordshire Charlotte Ibbs. What a moment for the whole Duchy as King Charles III hands the whole thing over immediately to the new Prince of Wales.
We found out that the Duchy owns land in 26 counties and even owns the seashore between low and high tide in Cornwall, as well as Poundbury and Dartmoor Prison! As Charlotte explained the Duchy has been about for 700 years and the aims aren’t just about income, they aim to add value to communities and the natural environment.
It was lovely to see so many guests, and welcome and congratulate new member Sam Banks. She has lots of experience in fundraising, and running events and last year was awarded A Woman of Influence award.
Supper was a Spanish inspired affair – who knew Tortilla was such a challenge to flip… and who knew how delicious Almond and Orange cake is?
£220 was made for our charity fund and a good night enjoyed by all.
Probably should add into the notes above. The club was pleased to have handed over £800.59 to Hay Animal Rescue for their work and to receive a receipt and letter of thanks explaining that this year alone they have rehomed over 30 cats and kittens, two dogs and a number of small furries, – as well as rescuing a red kite, a grounded house martin and a handful of hedgehogs!
